Corrosion Effect on the Efficiency of High-Frequency Mechanical Impact Treatment in Enhancing Fatigue Strength of Welded Steel Structures

Abstract Fatigue and corrosion are two material degradation phenomena that occur in welded steel structures. High-frequency mechanical impact (HFMI) treatment is a post-weld method aims to increase the fatigue strength of details. This paper investigates effect on efficiency this enhancing resistance. More than 150 test results corroded HFMI-treated details collected from several research articles analyzed for both transverse attachment butt-welded The HFMI decreases as level increases. However, found have high potential prolonging life, even circumstances an extremely corrosive environment.
